Photos by Maurice Beverage

Maurice C. Beverage (1841-1931) was a portrait photographer in Oconto, Wisconsin and Marshalltown, Iowa. He was born as Michel Dupont, son of Pierre Pascal Dupont and Angelique Gagne. He and his brothers Fred and David changed their last name to Beverage or Beveridge for unknown reasons. On November 20, 1871 he married Hattie Crum in Oconto, Wisconsin. They had four children, Herbert, Maude, Nora and Mabel. (Other spellings of his name: Morris Beveridge, MC Beverage, M. C. Beverage.)

His photo studio in Marshalltown was known as Beverage Cottage Gallery. He also was a partner there with Benjamin Jarvis and S. E. Jessup. He may have produced stereo photos and postcards as well as portraits. In Oconto, Wisconsin, he advertised as "Fine Art Gallery, Dealer in Frames, Albums &c." and may have been associated with T. A. Ridgeway. The Oconto shop was at the corner of Maine & Section Streets.

From his obituary in the Times Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, Jan 6, 1931 and, Marshall County Iowa History, 1878, p. 548:

Maurice C. Beveridge (or Beverage) was born at Trading Post, Maine, June 8, 1841. He went to Canada in infancy and stayed till age 15 when he went to Michigan and Oconto, Wisconsin, where he learned his business. He married Hattie Crumb from Oconto, Wisconsin, 1871. He came to Marshalltown in Jan, 1876, when he engaged in the photography business. [This is useful information for those who are trying to date his photographs.] He had 4 children and died Jan 6, 1931. He left a brother Fred Beveridge of California and three grandchildren.

He ran the Beverage Cottage Gallery, a photography studio, from about 1876 to 1912.

Early business in Marshalltown was at 5 West Main St.; later at Cottage Gallery Studio, 108 North Center St. (I have seen photographs by Wallace listing the 5 West Main St. address.) An 1887 postcard of Iowa Soldier's home lists Beverage & Jessup, 3 West Main St. Marshalltown, Iowa.

The 1900 census for Butte, Montana lists his son Herbert Morris Beveridge as a photographer there.
